You have I’m sure been hearing a lot on the news about Zika and is it safe to travel to areas where the virus is spreading, like is it safe to travel to Rio for the Olympics, some athletes have even talked about not attending because of the disease. I think it’s important to know the facts about the disease, the media tends to hype these things up and distort the truth…..you may remember a year and a half ago we were worried about getting Ebola on a plane. Zika is definitely a concern, especially to women who are pregnant or planning to get pregnant, but otherwise the vast majority of people infected by a mosquito (75% of people infected) will never even know they have the disease, they don’t get any symptoms, and for the 25% who do become symptomatic, most get very mild symptoms. So is it really worth avoiding travel…only if you’re pregnant or planning on getting pregnant soon, otherwise no, and as always if you’re going to be in areas prone to mosquitoes, take precautions to avoid bites, use repellent and avoid sleeping with windows open at night, but I wouldn’t rule out travel to all tropical regions of the world because of Zika.
There’s a good summary here on the disease and if you did want to cancel your trips what the airline and hotel policies are so far.
